13.1 Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon – Race Info»
Garry Bjorklund, a native of Duluth, Minnesota, is famously known for winning the first-ever Grandma’s Marathon in 1977 and claiming the championship again in 1980. However, his accomplishments extend beyond this local feat. He also represented the United States in the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, where he finished 13th in the 10,000-meters race. In honor of his significant contributions to the running community in the area and throughout Minnesota, the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon was established in 1991. The race has since evolved into one of the largest half marathons in the country, attracting about 10,000 participants each year to the shores of Lake Superior.
3.1 William A. Irvin 5k – Race Info»
The William A. Irvin 5K has been a staple event of the Grandma’s Marathon weekend since its inception in 1994. This race has gained immense popularity over the years and has now become the perfect kickoff event to an exciting lineup of races and festivities. People of all ages and abilities participate in this 3.1-mile race, which was named after the William A. Irvin ore boat that is located adjacent to the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC). In 2016, a new course was introduced, which takes participants on a breathtaking tour of Duluth’s Lakewalk on the scenic shores of Lake Superior before looping back through Canal Park to the finish line.
